The port city of Tianjin has grown to become the third largest city in China with a population of 10 million. Industry and commerce are gradually displacing
agriculture, and the influx of new workers requires additional living space.
The Zhangjiawo project has proven that high residential density and generous
open space planning led to the liveliness that the project participants
had in mind.

Three factors play a significant role here: firstly, fragments
of the former cultural landscape in the form of preserved fruit trees have an impact on the open space.
Secondly, the (partially preserved) ditches, canals and ponds are ecologically valuable
and economically sensible as integral
components of a comprehensive stormwater management system. And last but not least, an attractive footpath network
crosses the residential area, into which squares, path passages and water areas are embedded
. Ramps and steps lead to the water, altogether this
differentiated open space system animates the social and cultural coexistence.

In Tianjin, the promotion of ecology, social coexistence and the preservation of the
Genius Loci was not only program but has become reality.
