New Freiburg Trade Fair Centre

Design of the outdoor facilities at the Neue Messe in Freiburg following a competition. Realisation in 2 construction phases.

The subject of the competition was the planning of a new trade fair complex on part of the Freiburg airport site. The programme envisaged an exhibition hall that could be expanded in 2 construction phases: Areas for temporary fair buildings and a place for amusement fairs, as well as attractive open-air areas for the future fair visitors. Extensive specifications for the development and parking had to be taken into account as well as requirements for the protection of biotopes and the economical use of space and costs.
The competition area was divided into three "functional tracks": The western biotope track serves as a compensation area for the structural intervention, the middle temporary use track serves alternately for consumer (northern area) and amusement fairs (southern area) and as a parking area (parking on the respective use-free part). The eastern rail is most intensively occupied by the construction of the exhibition hall, which can be extended from the 1st to the 2nd construction phase to the north.
In the implementation of the project in planning and construction management, it was necessary to adhere to strict cost and time specifications and at the same time maintain the high design and technical standard that we had set ourselves through the competition work and which was imposed on us by a large number of specifications regarding trade fair activities, flight safety, environmental protection requirements (rainwater infiltration, biotope protection, etc.), traffic, contaminated site disposal and much more.
