The Zollhallenplatz is to be seen as a stage that forms a high-quality but also scaled counterpart to the backdrop of the listed Zollhallen building, which was renovated in 2009. The square design follows the claim to reflect the historic building fabric, invites people to linger and in terms of sustainability allows a look into the future.
Generous urban terraces with stone and wooden lounging furniture form the focal point of the square with a future cafe pavilion. Shade is provided by a light grove of ornamental cherries. Perennial beds with ornamental grasses mediate the transition to the square area.
Through the integration of a sustainable water concept, no surface water is fed into the sewage system, even during heavy rainfall. The precipitation is cleaned and fed to the groundwater via green infiltration areas and underground infiltration trenches. Small remnants of the rainwater remain in ground stone troughs as an invitation for the children.....
Another special feature of the square design is that 100 of the surfaces to be redesigned were made with used, high-quality demolition materials from the freight station site.
