The Volme presents itself in the city as a deepened and lifeless canal, without accessibility and with a backyard image. With the redesign between the Kaufmannschule weir and the Marktbrücke bridge, the first cornerstone was laid for a long-term waterway restoration.
Integrated into the redesign and renaturation of the Volme was the project "Water Art at the Town Hall". In the foyer of the newly built town hall, a colorfully designed water-light ribbon symbolizes the close connection of the Volme with Hagen. A glass sculpture gives the entrance area transparency, water runs over the coloured glass with a structured surface, which becomes an artistic work of art through light refraction, wave movement and sound.
Threads of light" establish the connection between art and the Volme: coloured inlays are embedded in the floor of the town hall, symbolising the water landscape around Hagen. Through the installation of an artistically designed staircase with waterfall-like cascades and a terrace, the further open space outside is upgraded and contact with the river is possible again. A central meeting point has been created here.
When the Volme carries normal water, one can reach the Kaufmannsschule directly next to the course of the river via a similarly designed staircase.
