Heiner-Metzger Square Neu-Ulm

As a former railway station square, Heiner-Metzger Platz is an important urban development component of the inner city expansion in the direction of the Danube embankment and the State Garden Show grounds in 2008.

The first ideas for the design of the square were developed together with pupils in school projects. They were translated by Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl into an urban design language, whereby attractiveness and modern characteristics were to be the design. In a one-day workshop with the pupils at Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, the preliminary design was discussed, among other things. Suggestions from the students were incorporated into the design.

The design idea is based on a zoning in three differentiated areas. The tree canopy with sand surfaces and water-bound cover rises from the diagonally led plate compound. Activities include a bouldering wall, table football and a floor chess game. A water ensemble acts as a striking symbol of the entire square, visible from afar. Water falls as an approx. 4m high water veil onto the 5cm deep, calmly lying water surface. As vertically placed accents they delimit the open space to the urban area. Their water sound contributes to the unique atmosphere of the urban square. The water is supplied by drinking water that is circulated through a cistern. It is technically cleaned and treated.
