Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, which connect the Ohio, the largest tributary of the Mississippi River. Over time, Pittsburgh has formed a hilly landscape. Today, heavy industry is shifting to civic life and there is a strong desire to discover a new sense of vitality and redevelop the waterfront of the Three Rivers area into an active and sustainable urban open space. The Three Rviers Master Plan is a distillation of an evolving waterfront vision. Commissioned by the Riverlife Task Force, planning began with a two-week design phase. Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl worked directly with key stakeholders, developers, architects, city officials, and Pittsburg landowners. The results formed the basis for the final plan. Before identifying individual project areas for development, the entire Three Rivers was considered as a whole, resulting in 4 comprehensive project goals.
Create Synergy: Like a confluence of unique Pttsburgh instruments from a collection of places for sports, education, culture, and recreation that culminate in the master plan. They come together with a universal design approach and sustainable design in action with the focus of the river. Define the character of the waterfront: the character and spirit of the larger waterfront sections have been captured. Weave: the city, its people and the rivers together. The rivers must be given space to breathe.
