The Jurong Eco Garden covers a 50 hectare site with a 5 hectare "green core". This green core provides a place of recreation for residents as well as for local flora and fauna. The park is framed by groups of buildings on one side and a small woodland on the other; the themes of town and nature come together here. The existing ecological habitat, including green spaces, woodland and moorland, has been integrated as best as possible into the new park. Existing animal species were documented in order to provide them with the best possible habitat in an urbanizing environment. The original topography of the site was maintained, allowing room for a natural stormwater management system. Retention and treatment swales provide a transition for stormwater from the street to the center of the park where it can infiltrate and circulate. After cleaning in the park's own biotope, the water is used to flush the toilets of the adjacent buildings.
The Jurong Eco Garden is an exemplary example of Singapore's efforts and strategic goal of developing into a sustainable city in which the best possible synergies between people and nature are achieved in the smallest possible space.
