Slate experience

In the course of recultivating the mining areas of a cement plant near the village of Dormettingen, not only was agricultural land restored, but a sustainable added value for people and nature was created in the form of the Schiefer Erlebnis Park. Instead of recultivating the extraction of raw materials beyond recognition, the site is given back to the local residents and visitors as a nature experience park and event backdrop. It thus offers the possibility of value creation for the region.

Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl was initially commissioned to plan a small lake. This developed during the planning process into a larger, central element with an area of 5,000 sqm. The lake water is purified in soil filters, rainwater from the park is collected to feed the lake and to operate a water playground.

Following the lake was the design of important elements of the park, a fossil tapping site and the lake plaza as a central square, where the construction of a restaurant and service building was also advanced. As the project progressed, Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl was also commissioned to plan an exhibition concept. For this purpose, places and scenes in the park were designed which, through the newly developed "information stones", allow the visitor to directly experience cultural landscape and historical contexts. The starting point for the implementation of the Schiefer Erlebnis Park is the combination of industrial character with a design appropriate to the location.
