The Rankbach, which was uniformly paved in 1948 and extended with bank walls, was redesigned close to nature over a length of 100 m as part of the redevelopment of the town centre of Malmsheim. The most important planning principle was the combination of flood protection, local recreation and ecology.
The Rankbach was generously widened and made accessible to the public. In order to be able to implement the widening of the watercourse in the centre of Malmsheim, the left bank wall was demolished and a near-natural embankment was created. On the right bank, new heavyweight natural stone walls were built from the old stones of the bank wall at a different location. A large seating area with steps and a plaza directly on the banks of the stream cut through the new wall and form the core of the open space design. The stream itself was structurally and ecologically upgraded with elements such as stone groynes, sturgeon stones and deadwood elements.
