The Marienkirche is located in the center of East Berlin and is a testimony to medieval architecture. Originally surrounded by irregular block development, the remaining site of this gem has been shaped since the 1960s by the television tower, prefabricated buildings and the main roads. Also, the ground level of the surrounding city grew over the centuries by almost 1.50 m in height, so that the old sacred building today stands in a depression.
The redesign of the church environment strengthens the spatial situation of the Marienkirche and provides it again with an independent, quiet atmosphere in the very lively environment.
The structure is now in a generously widened square on its medieval level. Clinker walls and stairs limit the church place to the environment and catch the height differences. The area cuts finely into the depth and maintains a protective distance to the heterogeneous surroundings. The new walls form pews with sculptural projections and recesses, which in their proportions are reminiscent of church pews.
Klinker bands trace the historical layout of the city. Disappeared buildings were verified by intensive archaeological excavations. Info steles explain the interesting and eventful history of the place.
