In the course of the relocation and widening of the K 5508, the district of Rottweil (Rottweil District Road Authority) was forced to relocate the Glatt between the Sulz district of Glatt and the mouth of the Glatt into the Neckar at Neckarhausen and to create a completely new watercourse profile. The relocation offered the opportunity to redesign the partly technically obstructed and structurally poor watercourse with a view to achieving the objectives of the EU-WFD (Water Framework Directive - programme section deficit structure) and to enhance the watercourse ecology. The planning and execution of the measure was carried out in close coordination with the authorities concerned. Parallel to the planning, hydraulic modelling (2D calculation and model with Hydro AS and SMS) was carried out. Extensive land acquisition was necessary for the implementation of the measure. On the right bank, on the side of the floodplain facing away from the road, it was possible to dispense with bank protections and to give the watercourse room for its own dynamic development. The bed substrate in the old course of the Glatt was secured and moved, and existing reed and tall shrub vegetation was transplanted. The impact of the reconstruction on the fish fauna was minimised by several fishing operations. A large number of deadwood structures, together with the different depth and substrate zones in the new watercourse, form valuable fish habitats.
