Wuppertal is a city with rich art and cultural offerings and historically shaped by the importance of the textile industry. The Werth is to be strengthened by the redesign as a diverse lifeline of the district and thereby reflect the identity of Barmen.

In our design concept, we interpret the city centre of Barmen as an "urban theatre", whose urban spaces can be programmed and played in a varied way in the form of different "scenographies". The "Alte Markt" and the "Platz an der Werther Brücke" form the main entrances and "foyers". The "Johannes-Rau-Platz" and the "Geschwister-Scholl-Platz" are as "big and small stage" the urban spots for markets, festivals and events. As a "catwalk", the Werth forms the connecting, linear backbone within this exciting sequence of squares. The cross streets of the Werth are connected by the punctual "satellites", which mark the "side entrances" to the city centre. What is special about our idea is that computer-controlled light projectors will immerse the stone cultural carpet and the pedestrian zone in completely different atmospheres through a composed "light script", depending on use and time of day. The city centre will become an "urban theatre" with diverse scenographies.
