A state-of-the-art zero-energy building has been constructed on the campus of the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. The 4,000 square meter energy efficiency center is used by the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and the local energy supplier NEW. The pentagonal building is characterised above all by its striking façade: this consists of blue shimmering photovoltaic (PV) and glass elements sloping against each other. 77 PV modules on the façade and 230 modules on the roof provide enough electricity to cover the building's entire energy needs. The sustainable approach continues inside, where an energy centre secures the energy supply.
The compact building on a pentagonal plan stands on the western edge of the university campus, which actually has its brick old main building on Webschulstrasse running north. With a diagonal gesture from the street to the tree-lined campus, it creates its own forecourt here with a flight of steps and a new address. On the ground floor and in the base, NEW presents its services to customers, while the four upper floors are used by start-up companies from the energy sector and by the university.
