Campus of the University of Erfurt

With the re-foundation of the university in Erfurt in 1994 and the establishment of the campus on the site of the former teacher training college, numerous building measures became necessary. The first step - the new library building and the design of its outdoor facilities - set contemporary standards for the internal self-image and the external appearance. With this clearly visible will for renewal, design criteria were defined for the renewal process of the building and open space substance, which is partly under monumental protection, based on the preliminary design planning of the landscape architecture office KLuska from Munich. The basic principles are openness, generosity with clear orientation possibilities under the aspects of the existing specifications. A system of squares and axes has been created, which in an interweaving structure connects not only the three main accents but also all other institutes, facilities and building entrances and ensures a high quality of stay. The renewal of the technical supply and disposal systems led to considerable interventions in the grounds. The result is a technically up-to-date development and infrastructure as well as an open, generous appearance for the university campus with an independent atmosphere without abandoning the good or proven structures. The planning was developed in several steps and coordinated with all parties involved - representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the University, the State Building Authority and the specialist engineering offices. For the listed building ensemble of the former Pedagogical University, our office developed a monument preservation objective.
