German Climate Computing Centre, Hamburg

A representative entrance area was designed for the extension of the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ).
The forecourt of the main entrance is characterised by its generosity. Reduced to the most necessary equipment elements, the main design element - the wing staircase - moves into the centre of attention.

The staircase gently detaches itself from the slightly sloping terrain in the form of groups of steps and forms a discreet, yet easily legible entrance carpet. The most striking design feature is the free-floating steps, extended beyond the width of the stairs, each forming the end of a group of steps.
This dynamic design feature has a high recognition value and makes the plain forecourt a special place. The cantilevered steps result in the plaza surface dipping beneath them in gentle waves, making the entrance area appear to flow towards the visitor.
The high-quality concrete paving with natural stone facing ensures a long service life and offers an additional attraction for the viewer due to its reflective effects in sunlight.

At night, the entrance area is staged by an eye-catching lighting concept: The adjacent façade of the extension building is highlighted by uplights, whereas the square area is divided into diamond-shaped islands of light by the pole luminaires. Blue light bands in the floor take over the guiding function to the entrance at night, which is carried out by the staircase during the day.

In addition to the entrance area, the parking area for employees and the side entrance of the extension are part of the design. The simple graphic design of the main entrance is continued in a more relaxed form. More differentiated furnishings - such as a smoking pavilion and bicycle shelter - give this location its own identity and quality of stay for employees during their breaks.
