The schoolyard of the Mahlsdorf elementary school is being redesigned through a variety of measures. The new gymnasium and the mobile classrooms are being integrated into the outdoor space to create a uniform appearance.
The courtyard will be designed as an island concept. These islands will be provided with lawns, sand or fall protection gravel. Areas divided into age groups will be equipped with age-appropriate play equipment. Most of the existing trees are to be retained and new trees planted. Grass islands serve as recreation and play areas, partly in the shade of the trees. Lawn areas are supplemented by solitary shrubs, with flowering shrubs in the light and shade-tolerant small shrubs under the trees. The edges of the islands consist partly of concrete benches with wooden seating. Existing benches and table combinations will be refurbished and reinstalled. The same applies to the existing paving, which will be reused in the edge areas.
The main areas of the schoolyard will be paved with highly permeable paving, partly colored to highlight playing fields. The grass islands and planting will maintain the green character of the courtyard and ensure drainage together with the paving.
