Viktualienmarkt München © 2005 Wolfgang Färber
The Viktualienmarkt is located in the middle of Munich's city centre. This project involved redesigning and redesigning part of the existing market and supply situation. The primary goal was to improve accessibility from the south and west sides to the market, to open the market to the public space, and to remove barriers in the public space. The narrow public street space delimited by concrete troughs was replaced by an open, clearly structured area. The formerly chaotic short parking and delivery area was upgraded to a market place. A collection point for recyclable materials, planted with climbing plants, now encloses the square and thus forms the missing spatial edge. Through the construction of seating areas, which invite to rest and linger, the square gains additional quality of stay.
