A place for the wine festival: In the ensemble of the late medieval old town of Memmingen, the wine market occupies a central position. In the course of its redesign in 2008, the square regained its importance as the centre of commerce in the town, which had previously been obscured for decades by excessive traffic use.
The generous design of the city floor with large-format paving and slabs of granite restores the unity of the square and thus brings out the unique architectural ensemble all around. Staging in the public space was thus largely dispensed with. Only in the design of two bus shelters with glass printed as vine leaves(e) was a discreet design reference to the place, which has already prompted an English journalist to a mention in a London daily newspaper.
Meanwhile, the citizens of the former free imperial city have rediscovered the place for a variety of uses such as gastronomy, parades and not least the early autumn wine festival .
Also the current desire for something more green in the traditionally 'stony city' was -
monument-care unobjectionable - taken into account and planted at the western edge of the square a small plane tree roof.
