The aim and intention of the urban concept is to strengthen the identity of the two spaces that characterise the competition area - the main market and the fruit market - as well as their relationship to each other, and to improve their design quality and functionality in a targeted manner.

The urban definition of the main market through the framing buildings requires a consistently uniform square concept and design. The clear square space of the main market with the "beautiful fountain" in the north-west corner forms the beating heart of Nuremberg's old town, the central attraction and the urban focus of the concept.
The design of the urban ground follows the urban concept. The main market will be paved in accordance with its historical significance. The addition and mixture of the existing and reused dark granite paving with new material as well as the consistent laying in continuous rows results in a uniform, but in itself lively texture of the city floor.
While the main market must be understood as necessarily "stony" in its context, the fruit market offers space for identity-creating urban greenery: the guiding principle is a continuous single-sided row of fruit trees, in which ornamental apples in the section of Fünferplatz and cherries in the section of the fruit market are followed by city pears in the area of Spitalgasse.
A special, yet picturesque as well as functional element in the area of the fruit market is the "green hall" of pines, under whose crowns infrastructural facilities in connection with large markets and special events find space. Especially at the time of the Christmas market, the evergreen trees, which are also suitable for Christmas lighting, can preserve a dignified environment for the Frauenkirche.
