Through the redesign, the market square will once again live up to its urban significance as the central public space of the town of Illertissen and will be able to fulfil its function as the town's 'parlour'. The hitherto overriding function as a traffic area will be reduced while retaining the necessary access. Instead, different uses of the square as a recreation area, meeting place, event location, etc. are now increasingly taken into account.
The basic idea of the urban design is to emphasize the characteristic form of the square by taking up the curve of the eastern edge of the square with a strong linear element that separates the eastern roadway from the open space in the middle. With a watercourse the old ditch is taken up at this point, the accompanying bench element brings additional spatial effect and defines the partial spaces. This effect is intensified by the row of trees, which as a third element follows and reinforces this swing line. In the protection of these elements, a calm square surface is created, which slopes gently from the Martinsbrunnen in the north-west to a carpet of water with fountains at the lowest point in the south-east. To the south, steps close off the thus somewhat recessed square and, together with the long bench, create an open inner-city stage. On the bench element, the events on the square can be experienced particularly well, one sits on the "Illertisser rank".
The square area is designated as a 'traffic-calmed business area'. The center of the square will remain free of vehicular traffic with the exception of a row of parking spaces. The traffic layout with two separate directional carriageways as one-way carriageways on the east and west sides of the square and two crossings with carriageways in both directions of travel will be retained in principle.
Compared to its current state, the square will be much more landscaped with the redesign! Nevertheless, the character as a paved, urban square will be maintained. The trees take over mainly urban functions on the market place. The most important element in this sense is a row of 16 cherry trees that accompany the Illertisser Rang and emphasize the swing of the eastern edge of the square.
On the west side, three large solitary trees (robinias) are planted at the edge of the square area, thus creating a green element on the west side of the square and additionally delimiting the parking spaces there.
