A fringe of evergreen hedges forms the garden-architectural prelude to the Wolkengarten Potsdam. The clever placement of various elements creates privacy and a warm, pleasant garden realm at the same time. House and garden form a complementary and unified image; a place to feel good. The plot is divided into a front garden at street level and a slightly lowered rear garden area. The front garden area is characterised by a border of cloud-shaped hedges (privet), which are accentuated by loosely interspersed fruit trees (Malus and Pyrus). Offering both pictorial and physical, spatial experience, this garden area is intended to convey the archetypal notion of a labyrinth through the constant alternation of volumes and spaces thereby offering great variety with a minimum of resources. A planting of perennials accompanying the hedge bodies conveys seasonally changing aspects of colour and bloom, lushly complemented by spring-flowering plants scattered throughout the area. The slightly lower, open garden area is seen as a complement to the living area. Framed by a wall, a pergola and an outbuilding, it forms a sheltered recreation area whose eye-catcher is a solitary tree (Cedrus) with a strong character.
