The competition was to present ideas on how the design and function of the open spaces can be appropriately designed in the context of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, taking into account the urban development situation. A concept was to be developed that meets the specific usage requirements of the Bauhaus University and does justice to the significant works of van de Velde in its design quality.
In the tradition of the Bauhaus stage, the existing spatial fragments are transformed into atmospheric and spatially effective "open-air theatres". The design gives due prominence to the School of Art and the School of Applied Arts. The result is a sequence of separate, clearly legible - through simultaneous coexistence - multi-layered landscape spaces that embody both modernity and the past. These spaces, the so-called "stages", result from meanings, interpretations and experiences and draw on the potential of the site
