Germany has a rich architectural heritage of modernism. Beyond the widely known sites of Bauhaus architecture, equally important sites of garden art have emerged from the reform era, the period of classical modernism and post-war modernism. Many sites by renowned garden designers, such as Erwin Barth's Volkspark Jungfernheide and the grounds of Leberecht Migge's Hufeisensiedlung in Berlin or the Freundschaftsinsel in Potsdam by Karl Foerster and Hermann Mattern, have been restored in recent decades by landscape architects with internationally recognised expertise in the preservation of garden monuments and made accessible to the public as cultural assets.

The current online exhibition provides an insight into the new orientation of garden culture during this period with its different formal, architectural, social and horticultural trends by means of selected locations. Renowned garden architects of the modern era are introduced, and the fate that garden-cultural works and their creators suffered at the time of National Socialism is illuminated.
All these testimonies to history - the outdoor areas of housing estates and garden cities, town squares, (public) parks and home gardens - carry history within them. In the present, they are usable open spaces, offer relaxation and recreation, and thus also have a high degree of attractiveness, not only for those interested in culture and for experts.
